About Me

May 18, 2009

My name is Ravi (a.k.a. BBC, NRK). And every time I try this, I realize that I suck when it comes to “about me” pages. The traditional wisdom for such a page goes: introduce yourself, talk about your expertise, talk about how you are helping the audience and how to contact you. Let me try that then.

I sincerely believe that what I do is what defines me. I work for a large multinational company, currently managing technology. A PHB if you will. Prior to that, I completed my MBA at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta and obtained my bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

Looking back, my time at each of my stints has been pretty busy packing in a lot of experience. Studies have always been more about developing hobbies than actual course work. During my engineering, when I first got my hands on real networked computers, I helped run the student computing facility, in addition to managing the department website. This continued into my management years, where I ran the institute web portal, and built the first student email and GNU/Linux based proxy service. College was also a time for sports - Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Table tennis and Ball Badminton among others.

Work has given me broad experience across a number of functions in a large business. I have written code, driven projects, audited IT & financials and led teams in compliance audits. Again a broad set of activities, just for the richness of the experience.

I believe my experience gives me a unique point of view about technology and society in general - a point of view you will find on my blog. Add to it, a voracious appetite for all things news, about sums up my daily drive.

Oh, I do other stuff too. I like traveling - have kept it up for six years in the course of my work and almost 12 since I left home for college. I love photography. Am the proud owner of a Nikon D70. Music - heavier the better. Love the oldies - Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Ozzy and Pink Floyd. Also some of the more alternative like Atreyu, KoRn, Godsmack, Disturbed, Anathema, Staind, Tool, Type I Negative etc. Read a lot, in spurts - currently on epic fantasy. And sometimes I write - with a little more formality than my blog.

Not quite sure what you will find here. Squarely against common wisdom this site is not a scratch for one itch. It is a bit of everything. So hopefully, you will find it interesting enough to stick around.

About The Site

This is the fifth main revision of the site. This one is (trying to be) compliant with XHTML 1.0 (transitional) and uses a CSS + HTML based design. Some of the key changes of the site are given below:

  • Version 5 - this site. XHTML+CSS based. New professional looking design - with decent separation of content and markup. For the first time my blog is also publishing via FTP to my domain. Also implemented a consistent design between the blog and the rest of the site, making the transition between them seamless. No longer using a WYSIWYG tool - back to writing HTML by hand - using Notepad++.
  • Version 4 - first version hosted on my own domain (wayback machine) and the name of the site was changed to anarchius.org. Used a little bit of CSS, still had a bit of markup within the HTML though. Also since I had hosting, this version simplified template management through server side includes. Used Dreamweaver to build and maintain the pages.
  • Version 3 - first frame-less version (wayback machine). Still hosted on Geocities. Used a self developed template. Based on, I think CNET, BBC and a bunch of others. I think the hodgepodge of color schemes reflects that.
  • Version 2 - a frame based version, because I wanted to have consistent navigation across different pages in the site. Also implemented a new design. This was hosted on Geocities as well.
  • Version 1 - hosted on Geocities. Just a few pages, no real navigation or an attempt to link things up. This is when the name Quaxzarron was first used for the site.

The domain is registered at Signdomains through September 23, 2010. Hosting is provided by Aware Consultants.
